DeX Pad for Galaxy S9 leaks, reveals dock with new virtual touchpad

The Galaxy S9 shouldn’t look drastically different from its predecessor, but Samsung plans on introducing a refreshed accessory that brings along an entirely new experience. Last year we saw the DeX. It was a docking station that, when connected to an external monitor, turned your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy Note 8 into a portable computer of sorts. Samsung created a dedicated user interface to resemble other computer-based operating systems.

In 2018, the DeX will be upgraded. Mobile industry insider Evan Blass revealed a few months ago that it would allow for your phone to double as a touchpad or virtual keyboard. Now we’re learning exactly how it all works.

Samsung’s DeX Pad, as Blass says it’ll be called, features a new design and layout. Rather than standing up, the Galaxy S9 will be positioned horizontally on the dock while connected via USB-C for data transfers as well as charging.

Being flat on top of the dock means you can easily take advantage of the phone’s display as a touchpad or virtual keyboard. You’re probably still going to be better off adding your own mouse and keyboard, but the option is there to have Samsung’s flagship be a true all-in-one hybrid that quickly converts a phone to a computer.

From the leak, we can see the accessory will have at least four ports. The DeX Pad here shows two USB ports, one HDMI port, and one USB-C port. There could be additional ports on the opposite end of the dock, but we’re unable to see them.

Even a built-in fan is present to keep your phone cool if heavy workloads are underway.

Pricing hasn’t leaked, but chances are the DexPad ends up being priced the same as the original DeX or maybe a little higher. Samsung’s first docking station hit the market for $150 in 2017.
